Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are thinly applied coverings that are placed over the surface of the teeth to make them look better.
What are porcelain veneers made of?
Porcelain dental veneers are fashioned from either porcelain or from a type of compressed ceramic resin. Tooth coverings made from veneer porcelain are more resistant to staining and more natural-looking in the way they redistribute incident light. Conversely, resin veneers are not as thick as porcelain dental veneers and do not need as much shaving of the teeth to make room for them.
What are porcelain veneers used for?
A porcelain veneer may be used to fix teeth that are:
- Worn down
- Damaged
- Stained Â
- Misaligned or irregularly shaped
- Have gaps between them
Veneer porcelain coverings are also sometimes placed on for teeth that contain substantial fillings or that do not have very much tooth structure.
What is the procedure for getting a porcelain veneer?
There are a couple of different techniques for applying a porcelain veneer. There is the  indirect method and the direct process. The direct approach can be done in one visit. Here, the resin is applied to the external surfaces of the teeth.
The indirect technique for implementing a porcelain veneer requires two visits to the dentist. At the first visit, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth and give them a temporary coating. Getting a tooth ready for a porcelain veneer involves removing around 0.5 mm of dental enamel from the natural tooth; this is roughly equivalent to the thickness of the veneer porcelain that will be placed at the next visit. Your dentist may numb your mouth for this phase of the porcelain veneer treatment.
The next visit takes place when the veneers are back from the laboratory, around two to three weeks after the initial visit. This is when the temporary tooth coverings are taken away and the porcelain veneers are set in place. The dentist may need to remove and replace the porcelain veneer teeth one or more times to achieve the best fit.
What are the advantages of porcelain veneer teeth?
Porcelain veneers are better than having a crown because less of the natural tooth needs to be removed. Porcelain veneers also look more natural, do not stain easily and cause less irritation to the gums. Veneer porcelain can be tinted to make a dark tooth look whiter by comparison. Porcelain dental veneers are also often chosen over crowns because they do not require as much reshaping of the natural tooth and they are better-looking and stronger.
